Bhabhi Thulla strategy: how to get away and never be the Bhabhi
Updated 25 October 2026
In Bhabhi Thulla (Getaway) nobody wins by luck alone. The players who get away first are the ones who get rid of their dangerous high cards at the right moment and who remember which suits each player has run out of. Here is how to do it.

1. Your high cards are the danger
When a thulla happens, the player who played the highest card of the suit that was led picks up the whole trick. That means aces and kings are not strong in this game, they are risky. Your main job is to get rid of them safely.
- Safe moment: when you are the last player in a trick and everyone has followed suit, nobody can thulla any more. Drop your biggest card of that suit there.
- Early rounds are safer. At the start most players still hold every suit, so a thulla is unlikely. Play your high cards in the first rounds of a suit.
- When you lead, lead a suit you have many of, with a middle card, so you keep control without being the highest.
2. Track who is out of each suit
Every time a player can't follow suit and throws a different card, they have shown they are out of that suit. Remember it. Leading that suit again invites a thulla, and if you hold the highest card in that trick, you pick it all up. Before you lead, ask: who has run out of this suit, and am I going to end up highest?
3. Playing a thulla well
- When you can't follow suit you may throw any card. Throw your most dangerous high card of another suit: an ace or king you were afraid of.
- No thulla is allowed in the first round, so a player without spades in round one just throws a card away.
- A thulla aimed at a player with many cards hurts less than one aimed at a player about to get away. Think about who will pick up.
4. Playing just under
When you must follow suit and can't win safely, play the highest card that is still lower than the current highest card. You get rid of a big card without becoming the target of a thulla.
5. The take-cards move
On your turn (after the first round) you can take all of the next player's cards. They get away straight away. Use this only when it helps you: for example when the next player has just a few low cards that fit your suits and you can then lead safely. Taking a big hand of high cards is almost always a mistake.
6. The endgame: last two players
With two players left, the last-card trap applies: if your very last card wins the trick, you can't get away yet. You draw one of your opponent's cards and must lead it. So when you are down to one or two cards, try to make your last card a losing card: keep a low card for the end, not an ace.
Common mistakes
- Holding on to aces until the end, when every trick is a thulla risk.
- Leading a suit that a player has already shown they are out of.
- Using "take cards" just to slow someone down, and ending up with their high cards.

Questions
How do you win at Bhabhi Thulla?
Get rid of all your cards before the others. Play your high cards when no thulla is possible, remember which suits players have run out of, and keep a low card for the very end.
When should I play my ace in Bhabhi?
Early in a suit, or when you are the last to play and everyone has followed suit. Then nobody can give a thulla and the ace is thrown away safely.
What is the last-card trap in Bhabhi Thulla?
With two players left, if your last card wins the trick you cannot get away yet. You draw one of your opponent's cards and must lead it.
